At Airbnb, trust isn't just a value-it's the foundation of every connection made between hosts and guests around the world. Since 2007, we've grown from a single home in San Francisco to a global community of over 4 million hosts who have welcomed more than 1 billion guest arrivals. Our Trust team works every day to keep that community safe, building the technology that protects people, homes, and experiences from fraud in all its forms.
What is this role?
We are hiring a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the Trust Engineering team on a full-time, remote basis. This is a senior-level individual contributor position focused on developing and scaling machine learning systems that defend our platform against evolving threats.
What will you do?
- Build and continuously improve large-scale machine learning models that detect fraud, assess risk, and protect both online and offline interactions across the Airbnb platform.
- Collaborate with software engineers, product managers, data scientists, and operations teams to identify high-impact opportunities, refine requirements, and measure the results of your models.
- Design, productionize, and operate end-to-end machine learning pipelines that handle both batch and real-time workloads, working closely with other trust and platform teams to respond to new attack patterns.
What makes you a great fit?
You bring 12 or more years of applied machine learning experience in industry, along with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a related field. You write production-grade code in Python, Java, C++, or Scala and have strong data engineering skills to match.
You understand machine learning best practices deeply-from feature engineering and model selection to training/serving skew minimization and A/B testing-and you have hands-on experience with algorithms such as gradient boosted trees, neural networks, and anomaly detection. You have built and productionized end-to-end ML infrastructure at scale and are comfortable with architectural patterns common in large, high-volume systems.
You have worked with at least three of the following technologies: TensorFlow, PyTorch, Kubernetes, Spark, Airflow, Kafka, or a data warehouse such as Hive. Experience in the trust and risk domain is a plus, and you value test-driven development, incremental delivery, and clear, well-designed APIs.
This role requires fluency in English.
What's in it for you?
The base pay range for this position is $244,000-$300,000 USD. Your actual compensation will depend on factors such as training, transferable skills, work experience, and business needs.
In addition to competitive pay, we offer life insurance, eligibility for bonus and equity, Employee Travel Credits, and the flexibility of remote work within eligible U.S. states. The role may occasionally require time at an Airbnb office or offsite as agreed with your manager.
