At Volta Labs, we are reimagining the future of genomics. Our mission is to build a first-of-its-kind digital fluidics platform that automates sample preparation, turning processes that once took hours into tasks completed in mere seconds. By removing the burden of manual setup, we are creating a technology-agnostic suite that we believe will accelerate medical research by decades and help define the hospital of the future. We are a team of curious, collaborative innovators who thrive on experimentation and are deeply passionate about the intersection of biology, robotics, and high-performance computing.
The opportunity
We are looking for an Electrical and Embedded Systems Lead to take ownership of the electrical sub-systems and firmware integration for our first commercial product. In this role, you will be the bridge between hardware and software, ensuring that our complex electromechanical systems are designed, built, and tested to the highest standards. You will lead a talented team of electrical, firmware, and test engineers, guiding them through the entire product lifecycle from initial concept to mass production and launch.
A day in the life
- You will translate high-level product requirements into detailed electrical and firmware designs, overseeing the development of printed circuit boards and cable assemblies.
- You will mentor and lead your engineering team, ensuring that every design meets our quality standards and stays on schedule while fostering a culture of technical excellence.
- You will collaborate closely with mechanical and software teams to integrate hardware and software into fully functional sub-systems, including the development of verification tests and manufacturing assembly line diagnostics.
Who you are
You are a seasoned engineer with 6 to 8 years of experience in developing complex electro-mechanical or robotic systems. You have a proven track record of taking products from early concepts through to mass production, including navigating EMI/EMC and safety certifications. You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Computer Engineering, and you have spent at least 1 to 3 years in a leadership role where you successfully managed teams of five or more engineers.
Your technical toolkit includes:
- Expertise in electrical CAD design, with a strong preference for Altium.
- Proficiency in Linux environments, Python scripting, and low-level C++ firmware development.
- A deep understanding of motion control, sensors, and control algorithms.
- A passion for debugging and a natural curiosity about how systems function at the hardware level.
- Fluency in English and the ability to communicate effectively across multi-disciplinary teams.
Why you'll love it here
This is a full-time, on-site role based in our Boston office, where you will work alongside a team dedicated to changing the face of bio-automation. We support our team members with a comprehensive benefits package designed to provide security and balance:
- Equity compensation to share in our growth and future success.
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- A 401k plan to help you save for your future.
- Paid time off to ensure you have time for rest and personal adventures.
- Commuter benefits to support your travel to our Seaport office.
