At Smart Design, we believe in the power of creating technology that improves lives in meaningful and tangible ways. We bring together multidisciplinary teams of engineers and designers to solve complex problems that are as much about the human experience as they are about technical precision. We are currently looking for someone who shares our passion for detail and innovation to help us build the next generation of products.
The role
We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join us for a temporary engagement lasting approximately three months. This is an on-site position based in Brooklyn, and you will need to be in the office at least four days per week. While this is a temporary role, there is a possibility for an extension or a transition into a full-time position depending on our project needs and your performance. You will be working at the intersection of various disciplines, so we are looking for someone who is comfortable moving between electrical, mechanical, and software tasks.
Core responsibilities
- Lead the development of hardware systems, including circuit design, analysis, verification, fabrication, and assembly.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to navigate technical tradeoffs, ensuring our project goals remain feasible and on schedule.
- Build and test mixed digital and physical prototypes of varying complexity to validate our design concepts.
Skills and experience
To succeed in this role, you should have a strong foundation in both digital and physical engineering fundamentals. We require the following qualifications:
- Extensive experience working with microcontrollers on both development and custom boards.
- Proficiency in specifying and working with LED lighting power supplies and controls.
- Hands-on experience with the assembly of wire harnesses and connectors.
- Expertise in KiCad for circuit design.
- Experience integrating cameras and optics into custom hardware.
- A solid understanding of agile development processes and version control.
- The ability to work across adjacent disciplines, such as supporting mechanical engineering tasks.
Bonus points if you have experience with embedded software development in C, C++, ARM, or ATMEL, or if you are comfortable working in a Linux environment with Python. Familiarity with CAD software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or CREO is also highly valued.
Compensation and benefits
We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building an inclusive culture. Please note that we are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
How to apply
If you are ready to contribute to our mission, please submit your resume along with a portfolio or specific examples of your past projects. We cannot consider applications that do not include a portfolio. We are working with direct candidates only, so please, no third-party recruiters.
