At Pachama we harness satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to quantify the carbon stored in forests, giving companies and individuals a trusted way to support verified conservation and restoration projects around the world. Backed by investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Amazon Climate Fund, and others, we operate a marketplace that connects capital with high-integrity nature-based solutions. We are now seeking a Staff Data Engineer to guide the design and scaling of the data systems that underpin these insights.
Key outcomes
- Design and operate the ingest, storage, and compute pipelines that turn multi-terabyte geospatial datasets into the measurements our customers rely on to originate forest-carbon projects.
- Provide technical leadership across engineering and science teams, translating product needs into a coherent data-platform vision and ensuring that vision is executed.
- Establish and champion engineering best practices for data pipelines and distributed compute, mentoring colleagues to raise overall delivery quality and speed.
- Write production-grade code that optimizes the performance of geospatial transformations and algorithms, enabling rapid experimentation while maintaining reliability at scale.
Requirements
- Proven success leading cross-team engineering initiatives that deliver measurable business impact.
- Hands-on experience building data-engineering systems for ingestion, storage, orchestration, and large-scale compute, with the ability to apply these skills to new scientific domains.
- Strong command of Python, debugging and profiling tools, version control, and system-design principles.
- Familiarity with distributed-compute frameworks and concepts such as CPU/GPU interactions, latency and throughput optimization, and multiprocessing; prior work with Dask or Flyte is advantageous.
- Comfort operating in a fast-paced startup environment that values rapid iteration and clear product outcomes.
- English-language proficiency and a genuine commitment to environmental sustainability.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with raster and vector geospatial data, cloud-native formats such as Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF or Zarr, and libraries including Rasterio, GeoPandas, and Xarray.
- Prior collaboration with machine-learning teams on data-preparation workflows.
Compensation
In addition to a competitive salary, we offer the flexibility of fully remote work.
How to apply
If this opportunity aligns with your experience and aspirations, we invite you to submit your application. We look forward to exploring how your skills can contribute to our mission of protecting and restoring forests at scale.
