At the Technology Innovation Department, or TID, our mission is to apply modern research, design, and technology to make our transit system accessible and easy for every rider to use. We are a team of engineers, designers, and product specialists working to transform how people navigate the Boston area. As the MBTA reinvents itself, we have a unique opportunity to shape the future of transportation for millions of people. We are looking for a Senior UX & Information Designer to join our Screens Team and help us improve how we communicate critical information at our stations, stops, and onboard our vehicles.
What you'll be doing
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and fellow designers in an agile environment to plan and execute features for our digital signage ecosystem.
- Define content types, display logic, and design templates that ensure information is legible, consistent, and helpful for riders during their journeys.
- Create prototypes for testing, coordinate research sessions, and integrate those findings into our product roadmap to ensure our designs meet real user needs.
What you'll bring
We are looking for a systems-oriented thinker who is comfortable navigating complexity and designing for accessibility. You should be empathetic, collaborative, and able to communicate design logic clearly to interdisciplinary stakeholders. While we value your portfolio above all else, the ideal candidate typically brings:
- 5 to 10 years of professional experience in UX, interface design, interaction design, or visual design.
- Strong proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Figma or Adobe Creative Suite.
- A solid background in Information Design principles and experience working within an agile development framework.
- An interest in wayfinding, digital screens, and accessible design principles.
- The ability to plan and execute user research to inform your design decisions.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a large public agency.
What you'll get
This is a hybrid contract position based in the United States. You can expect a pay rate ranging from $129,000 to $172,000 annually, based on a full-time schedule. We offer a flexible work environment that balances remote collaboration with the essential in-person research required to serve our riders effectively.
