Principal Product Designer, Renter Pillar Lead at Apartment List

The role

We are searching for a visionary Principal Product Designer to lead our Renter Pillar. This is a full-time, executive-level position that operates on a 100% remote basis for candidates located in Canada within the Eastern Time Zone. As a key leader, you will shape the strategy and craft of our consumer products, co-leading our renter marketplace to drive growth and innovation. You will report directly to the VP of Design and work across mobile web, native applications, and AI-driven solutions to ensure our platform remains the premier rental matchmaker for city dwellers.

Core responsibilities

• Design intuitive, renter-facing products that eliminate friction and create moments of delight throughout the home-finding journey.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Analytics leadership to define and execute a winning product strategy that balances user needs with business goals.
• Coach and mentor designers within the renter pillar while conducting usability research to propose actionable, high-impact improvements.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you should possess a deep background in product design and a passion for the end-user experience. We are looking for the following qualifications:

• At least 10 years of experience shipping high-quality products, with a portfolio that demonstrates your work on web or native applications.
• Strong expertise in interaction design, prototyping, and visual design, with the ability to turn conceptual ideas into valuable, platform-specific solutions.
• A systematic mindset that allows you to think holistically about how your designs impact the entire product ecosystem.
• A business-minded approach that understands how to manage commercial needs while advocating for the best possible user experience.

Compensation and benefits

We offer competitive compensation packages that reflect your expertise and location. For our Canadian-based team members, the total target compensation ranges are as follows:

• Zone 1: $182,000 - $220,000 TTC, which includes a base salary of $160,000 - $194,000 plus equity.
• Zone 2: $163,000 - $198,000 TTC, which includes a base salary of $144,000 - $174,000 plus equity.
