Principal DevOps Engineer at Upstart

Upstart is a leading AI lending marketplace that partners with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit. Our mission is to provide effortless credit based on true risk, and we are looking for a Principal DevOps Engineer to help us scale our infrastructure and support our rapidly growing product offerings.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the long-term technical vision for our cloud infrastructure, compute, and service mesh technologies.
• Lead the management and improvement of Infrastructure as Code, Kubernetes, and GitOps pipelines.
• Build self-service solutions that empower product teams to deploy services and infrastructure efficiently.
• Establish key performance indicators and service level objectives to ensure the reliability and scalability of our platform.
• Mentor engineers across the organization and foster a culture of operational excellence.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure technical alignment and cohesive system architecture.

Must-haves

• 8+ years of experience in a DevOps or related engineering role.
• 3+ years of experience working with Ruby or Python.
• Expertise in managing cloud infrastructure on AWS.
• Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including scaling, logging, and monitoring stacks.
• Strong proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools and GitOps methodologies.
• Comprehensive understanding of service mesh technologies and distributed systems.
• Advanced knowledge of Linux architecture and production operations.
• Proven track record as a technical leader capable of influencing cross-domain initiatives.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working with developer experience teams to create low-friction deployment interfaces.
• Strong background in SRE best practices.
• Familiarity with performance and load testing tools.
• Experience with Kotlin applications.

Benefits

The anticipated base salary for this position is $181,000 to $250,000 USD, depending on your location and experience.
