Principal Data Engineer, Full Stack at Matterworks

At Matterworks we develop AI tools that turn large volumes of biological data into actionable insights for therapeutic discovery, development, and manufacturing. Our work centers on training large-scale deep learning models that predict the phenotype and behavior of biological systems. We are now looking for a Principal Data Engineer, Full Stack to strengthen the data infrastructure that supports these models and to help deliver reliable, production-grade systems in a hybrid work environment.

Key outcomes

• Own the full development lifecycle, translating user needs into delivered value through robust data pipelines and services.
• Partner daily with scientists, machine learning researchers, software engineers, and product colleagues to create transformative AI-enabled products.
• Integrate feedback from internal teams and external stakeholders to refine features and maintain high software quality.
• Resolve technical obstacles and apply pragmatic solutions suited to an early-stage environment.
• Shape overall technical direction and contribute to the evolving software architecture.
• Mentor team members and help build a high-performing engineering organization.

Requirements

• At least eight years of professional experience building and maintaining data pipelines.
• Industry background in life sciences, biotechnology, biochemistry, or a closely related discipline.
• Hands-on expertise with Python, Spark, AWS services including EMR and DynamoDB, Postgres, Apache Airflow, and Terraform.
• Proficiency in agile development practices and a track record of delivering value iteratively.
• Strong attention to detail combined with the ability to balance competing priorities.
• Proven skill in communicating and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to solve complex problems.
• Fluency in English.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience contributing to the technical direction of data platforms that support AI workloads.
• Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced startup setting where autonomy and continuous learning are valued.
