Member of Technical Staff, Backend at Runway

This is a full-time, senior-level Member of Technical Staff, Backend position. The role is fully remote and open to candidates anywhere.

Your impact

• Build and maintain backend services that power interactive video processing, streaming, and real-time collaboration for our AI-driven creative platform.
• Deploy and optimize cutting-edge computer vision and generative models so they run reliably at production scale.
• Continuously improve the performance, reliability, and maintainability of our codebases while shipping new product features on tight timelines.

What you'll need

• At least three years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend systems.
• Fluency in Python, Node.js, or Rust, and comfort working across multiple languages when needed.
• Experience designing and operating production-grade services, including the use of debugging and profiling tools.
• Ability to move quickly from idea to working prototype while collaborating closely with a fast-moving team.
• Humility and a genuine interest in learning from others; we value engineers who share knowledge openly.

Our backend services rely on Python with FFmpeg and HLS for video transcoding, PyTorch and TorchScript for machine-learning inference, and Kubernetes for container orchestration. Real-time collaboration and media-management APIs are built in TypeScript and Node.js and run as serverless functions on AWS Lambda. Strong familiarity with any of these technologies is a plus.

Perks and compensation

For this role we offer a salary range of $180,000–230,000. We also provide the flexibility of fully remote work so you can do your best work from anywhere.
