We are building the next generation of retrieval-augmented language models at Contextual AI and are looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to turn cutting-edge research into production systems that power RAG 2.0.
Responsibilities
- Conduct applied research on state-of-the-art retrieval-augmented language models, fine-tuning techniques, and preference alignment.
- Translate research findings into scalable production code and integrate models into customer-facing products.
- Design and implement backend services, APIs, and data layers that meet performance and reliability targets.
- Ensure smooth deployment and ongoing management of machine-learning pipelines on cloud infrastructure.
- Partner with researchers, product managers, designers, and customers to define requirements and deliver technical solutions.
- Continuously evaluate new tools and methods to improve platform capabilities and user experience.
- Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of knowledge sharing across the team.
Must-haves
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong, hands-on experience building and shipping machine-learning systems, including language-model work.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python, JavaScript, or Java and modern backend development practices.
- Practical experience deploying applications on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Proven ability to solve complex problems quickly in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.
- Clear, professional communication skills for working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Full professional fluency in English.
Nice-to-haves
- Master’s or PhD in a relevant discipline.
- Additional depth in NLP or large-scale language-model training and alignment.
Benefits
Salary Range for California Based Applicants: $150,000 - $300,000 + equity + benefits (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
