Engineering Manager - Applied Generative AI at Babbel

You will join Babbel as an Engineering Manager leading a team that builds the next generation of language-learning experiences powered by applied generative AI. We create mobile and web products that help millions of learners worldwide, and our engineering groups span infrastructure, content platforms, data systems, and B2B solutions. In this hybrid role based in Germany you will guide engineers who combine machine learning, natural language processing, and modern cloud services to deliver dynamic, personalized content at scale.

What you'll be doing

• Partner with product managers, designers, subject-matter experts, and engineers across platforms to define and deliver the technical vision for learning features that rely on dynamic, AI-generated content.
• Align your team’s roadmap with company objectives, manage cross-team dependencies, and ensure commitments are met while building trust with every stakeholder.
• Coach engineers who bring a range of skills-from full-stack development to data science-while evolving our engineering practices and striking the right balance between technical quality and delivery speed.

What you'll bring

• At least three years of hands-on experience applying NLP and ML techniques to production problems, plus three or more years leading high-performing engineering or applied-research teams.
• Practical knowledge of serverless and event-driven systems such as AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway, and AWS Kinesis, along with both SQL and NoSQL databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and DynamoDB.
• Strong coding ability in Python and JavaScript, familiarity with OpenAI APIs, and a solid grasp of ML frameworks, public-cloud services, and commercial AI solutions.
• Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills, along with a genuine interest in user-facing products and language learning.
• Fluency in written and spoken English; experience with AWS SageMaker, Bedrock, Databricks, text embeddings, or vector databases is a plus.
