At Inversion, we are dedicated to transforming space into a reliable transportation layer for our planet. Much like the historical shifts driven by the development of carriages, ships, and aircraft, we believe the next great leap for humanity involves universal access to the globe. We are currently building highly maneuverable re-entry vehicles capable of orbiting and precision landing anywhere on Earth. We are looking for a visionary leader to help us define this new era of space-to-Earth logistics.
What is this role?
We are seeking a Director of Engineering, Avionics to join our team on a full-time, on-site basis within the United States. This is a senior-level position where you will head our Avionics team. You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of the hardware and software that powers our spacecraft, including electronics controllers, power systems, RF systems, embedded software, guidance, navigation, and control systems, as well as PCB design and harnessing.
What will you do?
- Lead the technical and programmatic execution of the avionics, embedded software, and GNC systems for our Arc vehicle while reporting directly to the CTO.
- Build and mentor a high-performing team of engineers tasked with the design, testing, and production of avionics sensors and controllers.
- Establish company-wide standards, philosophies, and procedures for the development and integration of our complex aerospace systems.
What makes you a great fit?
To succeed in this role, you should possess a strong background in engineering complex computation systems and a passion for mission-critical space technology. We value candidates who can bridge the gap between technical requirements and reliable engineering outcomes.
- You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or Aerospace Engineering, or have equivalent industry experience with at least 10 years in the field.
- You bring 5 or more years of experience developing electronics hardware specifically for space applications like satellites or rockets.
- You have a proven history of taking projects from the initial design phase through to production.
- You possess deep knowledge of radiation-tolerant and multi-redundant system design.
- You are a fluent English speaker with excellent communication skills and the ability to inspire your team.
- Because our work involves sensitive technology, you must meet ITAR compliance requirements as a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual.
While not required, we would love to see experience with Altium for PCB design, C, C++, or Rust for embedded systems, and familiarity with environmental testing equipment like thermal-vacuum chambers.
What's in it for you?
We offer a competitive annual base salary ranging from $175,000 to $276,000. Your specific compensation will be determined based on your unique skills, experience, and internal equity assessments.
