OXMAN is a hybrid design and research company that merges the worlds of technology, biology, and design to create products and environments at multiple scales. We challenge the traditional human-centric design model, which has often distanced us from the natural world. Instead, we advocate for a nature-centric approach that seeks to heal this divide by fostering a radical synergy between human-made structures and nature-grown systems. Our work treats every project as a complex, interconnected system rather than an isolated object, allowing us to move beyond maintenance and toward the active advancement of nature. We are currently looking for a Senior Computational Designer to join our interdisciplinary team of makers and thinkers in the United States.
Key outcomes
- Develop sophisticated computational design processes, tools, and pipelines to explore the mediation between biosynthetic, biointegrated, and biomimetic systems.
- Create prototypes, models, and pre-visualizations that guide decision-making and design strategy across our projects.
- Conduct specialized research in areas such as computational geometry, intelligence, fabrication, and dynamics to support project goals.
- Implement design concepts by generating 3D models, machine interfaces, fabrication descriptions, and custom software or scripts.
- Produce high-quality 3D renderings and illustrations to communicate research and design concepts to our team, clients, and the public.
- Collaborate effectively with a diverse group of biologists, engineers, and fellow designers.
- Engage in team meetings and presentations to share progress and articulate creative ideas clearly.
Requirements
- At least 4 years of professional experience within an architecture, production, or design studio.
- A strong portfolio that demonstrates exceptional design taste and innovative, out-of-the-box thinking.
- Mastery of core digital design software, specifically SideFX Houdini, Rhino, Grasshopper, or Cinema 4D.
- Demonstrated proficiency in programming with Python or C++.
- A solid working knowledge of multivariable calculus and linear algebra at the university level.
- A deep understanding of artistic fundamentals, including form, composition, and color.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team while maintaining high ethical standards and integrity.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with real-time development tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, or Touch Designer.
- Specific research background in computational intelligence, fabrication, geometry, or dynamics.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $75,000 to $225,000. Actual compensation is determined based on relevant experience, job-related skills, and organizational needs. Our comprehensive package includes equity participation, year-end bonuses, immigration assistance, and a full suite of benefits.
How to apply
We review applications on an ongoing basis as our team and project needs evolve. If you are interested in contributing to our mission, please submit your application for consideration. We look forward to learning more about your work and how your unique perspective might help us bridge the gap between the human-made and the natural world.
