OXMAN is a hybrid design and research company that fuses biology, technology, and design to create multi-scale products and environments. We are currently looking for a Senior Computational Design Engineer or Computer Scientist to join our interdisciplinary team of thinkers and makers. In this full-time, on-site role, you will use computation and mathematics as a bridge between human-made and nature-grown environments, developing software and design tools that interface with advanced digital fabrication systems.
Responsibilities
- Build computational design processes and optimization tools that interface with industrial machinery and custom prototypes.
- Conduct simulations for material prediction and machine motion.
- Create prototypes, models, and pre-visualizations to guide our team through complex design decisions.
- Perform research in computational geometry, fabrication, intelligence, or dynamics to support project goals and internal platform development.
- Implement novel computational methods to generate 3D models, fabrication instructions, and custom software scripts.
- Produce high-quality 3D renderings and illustrations to communicate concepts to our team and clients.
- Collaborate across disciplines with biologists, engineers, and designers.
- Present your work and ideas clearly in team meetings and creative sessions.
Must-haves
- At least 4 years of professional experience in software development with a focus on design and geometry.
- Expertise in programming with Python and C++, including proficiency in relevant libraries like libigl, FEniCS, or PyTorch.
- Deep knowledge of interfacing methods for robotics, non-planar 3D printing, and slicer software.
- Mastery of digital design tools such as Rhino, Grasshopper, or SideFX Houdini.
- Strong grasp of university-level linear algebra and multivariable calculus.
- A portfolio that demonstrates creative, out-of-the-box thinking and a high standard for design.
- A solid understanding of artistic fundamentals, including form, composition, and color.
- Fluency in English and a commitment to working collaboratively with diverse teams.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with real-time tools such as Unreal Engine, Unity, or TouchDesigner.
