CMF Designer at Vast

At Vast, we are working toward a future where humanity thrives in space. We are currently developing artificial gravity space stations to enable long-term stays beyond Earth, starting with Haven-1, our commercial space station launching in 2025. We are seeking a Senior CMF Designer to join our team on a full-time, on-site basis in Long Beach. In this role, you will report to the Industrial Designer and play a vital part in shaping the aesthetic and functional experience of our human-rated space habitats.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement design strategies that integrate optimized materials, colors, and details to meet rigorous engineering standards and enhance the astronaut experience.
• Collaborate and negotiate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing partners and external suppliers, to ensure production designs align with critical mission milestones.
• Manage the end-to-end CMF process, from initial research and mood board creation to material innovation and the execution of final finishes for production.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should possess a strong background in design and material development. We require a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Transportation, or Graphic Design, along with at least 4 years of experience if you hold a degree in material science, or 6 years of related professional experience. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects, and communicating complex data effectively. Proficiency in ERP software for project management and the ability to create physical prototypes are essential. Please note that this position requires the ability to travel up to 20 percent of the time and the flexibility to work weekends or overtime when necessary to support mission-critical goals.
