At GovLab.ai, we are redefining the application of artificial intelligence. Our organization focuses on delivering high-impact machine learning solutions to the public sector, helping government departments make informed, data-driven strategic decisions. We operate in project-based teams led by experienced product owners and senior developers, providing our interns with a unique environment to gain hands-on experience while contributing to real-world public sector challenges. We are currently seeking an Associate Machine Learning Developer for a four-month internship running from September 2025 through December 2025, with potential opportunities to extend the term to eight or twelve months.
Key outcomes
- Collaborate with team members to pre-process data and identify meaningful trends or insights.
- Develop and refine machine learning models to address specific use cases identified by our public sector partners.
- Create proof-of-concept models and provide recommendations for integrating these solutions into existing business workflows.
- Participate in team planning sessions, educational workshops, and project presentations.
- Communicate technical progress and project results to both internal stakeholders and external public sector clients.
- Engage in independent research to stay current with state-of-the-art techniques and domain-specific knowledge.
Requirements
- Current enrollment in a post-secondary program at the University of Alberta, University of Calgary (Masters level only), Mount Royal University, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, or Queen's University.
- Proficiency in Python and experience with data science libraries including pandas, scikit-learn, and matplotlib.
- A solid foundational understanding of machine learning principles and software development practices.
- Ability to commit to a full-time 40-hour work week for the duration of the internship.
- Valid citizenship or a work permit that legally authorizes full-time employment in Canada.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
- Experience working with cloud platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently in client-facing meetings and presentations.
