At Trellis Law we deliver the most complete view of state trial court activity in the United States. By applying AI and machine learning to hundreds of millions of court documents, we turn raw legal data into clear, actionable intelligence that helps our clients move faster and win more cases. After closing a $40 million Series B round, we are scaling the platform that powers this work and are looking for engineers who want to shape how legal professionals interact with data at unprecedented scale.
The role
We are hiring a Senior AI/LLM Engineer to join our engineering organization on a full-time, remote basis. In this position you will design and operate the systems that connect natural language questions to a rapidly expanding corpus of legal knowledge, while ensuring those systems remain reliable as data volume and user demand continue to grow.
Core responsibilities
- Design and implement features that translate natural language queries into accurate, context-rich answers drawn from our legal data sets.
- Build and maintain data architectures that organize, transform, and serve large volumes of unstructured information at high speed.
- Collaborate with product and machine-learning teammates to scope new capabilities, own multiple projects from concept to production, and continuously improve model performance.
Skills and experience
- Seven or more years of backend engineering experience, including at least three to four years building production systems that rely on large language models.
- One to two years of hands-on work fine-tuning LLMs for domain-specific or otherwise custom applications.
- One to two years creating or using evaluation frameworks for LLMs, such as measuring the quality of extractive and abstractive summaries.
- Four to five years deploying custom machine-learning models and managing end-to-end pipelines that handle unstructured data.
- Proficiency in Python along with practical experience using SageMaker and Bedrock.
- Deep understanding of machine-learning concepts, especially as they relate to large language models.
- Experience mentoring other engineers across multiple projects.
- Background in startups is valued; a BS or MS in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience, is required.
- English fluency is essential for day-to-day collaboration.
Compensation and benefits
We offer a remote-first culture with optional office space in Los Angeles, a flexible vacation policy, and comprehensive benefits that include 100 percent coverage of health, dental, and vision insurance for you and your eligible dependents, plus a 401(k) plan with up to 3 percent employer matching.
How to apply
If this description aligns with your background and interests, we encourage you to apply. We review every application we receive and look forward to learning more about how your experience could contribute to Trellis Law.
