AI Platform Engineer at OpenVPN

OpenVPN is currently expanding its AI capabilities across the entire organization, and we are looking for a Senior AI Platform Engineer to lead this initiative. This is a greenfield opportunity where you will have the autonomy to define our architectural standards, establish governance frameworks, and build our platform layer from the ground up. As this is a full-time, remote position, you will be the primary authority on all things AI at OpenVPN, shaping how we integrate these powerful tools into our existing infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Manage the rollout and operational lifecycle of AI-assisted developer tools, including access controls, license management, and usage policies that align with ISO 27001 and SOC2 standards.
• Collaborate with internal teams to design and support AI-powered workflows, such as RAG pipelines and automation agents, while defining clear boundaries for infrastructure responsibilities.
• Architect and maintain our AI/ML cloud infrastructure on GCP using Terraform, ensuring all deployments are scalable, secure, and cost-effective.

Requirements

We are looking for a seasoned engineer who thrives in environments where they can build systems from scratch. You should possess the following qualifications:

• Extensive hands-on experience managing AI/ML infrastructure, specifically with platforms like Vertex AI.
• Deep fluency in Infrastructure-as-Code, particularly with Terraform, and a proven ability to create self-service modules for other engineering teams.
• A strong background in setting up and managing AI developer tooling at an organizational level, including tracking costs and usage.
• Experience navigating security and compliance requirements, such as ISO 27001 or SOC2, within a regulated environment.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain the technical and financial impact of AI investments to leadership.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and model serving infrastructure is highly preferred.
