Picture a workshop where mechanical, software, and systems engineers gather around a new printer prototype, testing a fresh idea that could place professional-grade fabrication on any desk. That is the daily reality at Formlabs, the company bringing high-resolution 3D printers to designers, engineers, researchers, and artists worldwide.
The opportunity
We are looking for a senior 3D Printing R&D Engineer to strengthen the team that owns the core printing process. In this on-site role you will explore new printer architectures, refine existing hardware and software, and help turn experimental findings into reliable products that reach thousands of users. Your work will sit at the center of our multi-disciplinary engineering effort, guiding how tomorrow’s machines and materials take shape.
A day in the life
- You might start by designing a test fixture, running a controlled experiment on galvo motion, and analyzing the data in Python to decide whether a small parameter change improves surface quality.
- Next you could meet with colleagues from mechanical, electrical, and software teams to review results and plan how those findings translate into an updated support-structure algorithm or a new print-head layout.
- By afternoon you may be sketching a next-generation printer concept on a whiteboard, then heading to the lab to assemble a quick prototype and capture performance metrics that steer the next design cycle.
Who you are
You bring a systems mindset and a habit of questioning assumptions with data. You have designed and built your own test fixtures, planned rigorous experiments, and turned raw results into clear recommendations. You are comfortable with mechanical design, mechatronics, and CAD, and you can write code in Python or Matlab to process experimental data. A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in an engineering field supports your practical experience, and you maintain a portfolio or website that showcases projects you are proud of. English fluency is essential for day-to-day collaboration. Bonus points if you have shipped a consumer hardware product or created physics-based models of complex systems.
Why you'll love it here
Beyond tackling ambitious technical challenges, you will enjoy equity compensation through RSUs, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401k with low-cost fund options, generous paid parental leave of up to 16 weeks, tenure-based sabbatical leave of up to 6 weeks, flexible time-off, commuter benefits, on-site meals and snacks, sponsored professional-development programs, and of course unlimited access to 3D printing resources. We are an equal-opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we encourage anyone who sees a way to contribute to apply.
