Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver clean, limitless fusion energy to the world by leveraging groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting magnet technology. We are looking for an experienced Vice President of Engineering to join our on-site team in the United States and lead our efforts in developing compact fusion power plants.
Responsibilities
- Own core engineering processes, including change control, requirements management, and risk assessment.
- Serve as a central decision-maker for complex technical trades and engineering recommendations.
- Align engineering goals with our broader company vision and communicate these objectives across the organization.
- Manage and reorganize engineering teams to ensure they remain agile and responsive to business needs.
- Build and scale the engineering department by leading recruitment, talent development, and mentorship.
- Collaborate with other department heads and the Chief People Officer to optimize team output and employee rewards.
- Represent the engineering organization as a key member of our Operating Team.
- Maintain accountability for project delivery, quality standards, and departmental budgets.
Must-haves
- Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent professional experience.
- At least 5 years of experience managing major engineering projects at the scale of a billion-dollar, multi-year program.
- Proven track record of leading significant technical trade studies and high-stakes decision-making.
- Deep expertise in at least one engineering discipline, such as mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control, fluids, or systems integration.
- Ability to influence and lead through strong professional relationships.
- Fluency in English.
Nice-to-haves
- Over 10 years of experience leading engineering teams at the director level.
- Background as a member of an executive management team, ideally with experience reporting directly to a CEO.
- Experience delivering hardware products and deploying new engineering tools or processes.
- Comfort working in an industrial facility environment with potential hazards like high voltage, cryogenics, and strong magnetic fields.
- Flexibility to travel or work occasional nights and weekends as required.
