We are Galapagos, a Belgium-headquartered biotechnology company that deploys capital to secure and advance transformative clinical-stage assets, primarily in immunology and oncology. We are expanding our executive presence in the United States and establishing a new office in Chicago to support this growth.
We are seeking a Vice President Corporate Strategy to join our team on a full-time, on-site basis and play a central role in shaping the company’s long-term direction. Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy Officer, this position offers substantial visibility across the Management Committee, the Board of Directors, and cross-functional leadership as we build a resilient, future-ready pipeline.
Key outcomes
- Develop and maintain comprehensive landscape assessments of priority disease areas and mechanisms of action in oncology and immunology, incorporating scientific potential, competitive dynamics, commercial considerations, and strategic fit.
- Partner with executive leadership to define clear priorities for pipeline expansion that will direct search and evaluation activities across therapeutic area, development phase, and geography.
- Construct dynamic portfolio models that evaluate technical, regulatory, and commercial risk alongside value creation and strategic alignment for both the overall portfolio and individual programs.
- Contribute to diligence teams, ensuring new opportunities align with corporate strategy and risk-reward frameworks, and translate findings into actionable recommendations for senior leadership.
- Produce forward-looking market intelligence on industry trends, competitor activity, and emerging innovation to identify new opportunities and pressure-test strategic choices.
- Design external scenarios that test disease-area and mechanism-of-action recommendations and strengthen overall portfolio resilience.
- Prepare agendas and high-quality materials for Management Committee meetings, CEO briefings, and Board of Directors sessions, synthesizing complex data into clear strategic narratives.
- Build and maintain relationships across the Management Committee while supporting cross-departmental initiatives that extend beyond core strategy responsibilities.
Requirements
- Ten to fifteen or more years of experience in biopharma strategy, corporate development, or strategy consulting, including direct involvement in pipeline-enhancing transactions.
- Deep knowledge of drug development and commercial dynamics within the biopharma sector, encompassing the scientific, clinical, and commercial drivers of value.
- Proven analytical and strategic capabilities, including experience with portfolio modeling and scenario planning, and the ability to convert complex information into clear, actionable insights.
- Strong executive presence and communication skills, demonstrated through regular presentations to senior leadership and boards.
- Track record of leading cross-functional projects in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environments.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Advanced degree such as an MBA, PhD, MD, or equivalent.
Compensation
Base compensation for this position ranges from $313,000 to $406,900. Actual base compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, job-related knowledge, demonstrated skills, and geographic location. This position is also eligible for participation in our performance bonus plan and long-term incentive program.
