Staff Software Engineer at Howl

What is this role?

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our team in a full-time, remote capacity. This is a senior-level role for a generalist who acts as a bar-raiser for our engineering standards. You will be a strategic contributor who balances product design with technical craftsmanship, taking full ownership of business goals and key objectives to improve the experience for our users.

What will you do?

• Provide technical and design leadership while collaborating closely with product and design teams to scope and implement new features.
• Design and build high-quality software components and subsystems, ensuring our infrastructure scales effectively as we grow.
• Write clear technical documentation to support decision-making and drive the implementation of automated testing to maintain system reliability.

What makes you a great fit?

You should have at least 10 years of experience building applications that face customers directly. We are looking for someone who is highly proficient in JavaScript, specifically using TypeScript and Next.js. You should be comfortable working with both MySQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with Vercel or serverless computing is preferred. Beyond your technical skills, we value strong communication, a curious mindset that focuses on the why behind our projects, and a deep intuition for building high-fidelity customer experiences.

What's in it for you?

The base salary range for this position is $190,000 to $210,000 USD per year. In addition to your salary, we provide a competitive compensation package that includes incentive pay and stock options. We also offer the following benefit:
