Staff Software Engineer, Commerce Platform at Carewell

The role

We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead our Commerce Platform. This is a full-time, executive-level position that can be performed entirely remote from anywhere. You will serve as the foundational leader for our core Orders Platform, taking ownership of critical services like checkout, autoship, fraud detection, and our cart system. While you will start as a team of one, you will be responsible for building and mentoring a dedicated engineering team to evolve our high-scale e-commerce infrastructure.

Core responsibilities

• Lead the architectural design, development, and optimization of our core commerce services, including checkout and autoship functionality.
• Establish the technical vision and roadmap for the Orders Platform, ensuring our systems remain scalable, secure, and aligned with business objectives.
• Mentor and coach engineering talent while fostering a culture of continuous improvement, rigorous code reviews, and technical excellence.

Skills and experience

To be successful in this role, you should have a strong background in high-scale e-commerce environments and a passion for building robust systems. We require the following qualifications:

• Over 10 years of software engineering experience, with at least 7 years in a lead or management capacity.
• At least 3 years of specific experience building and architecting high-scale e-commerce platforms.
• Expertise in TypeScript and modern frameworks like React.
• Deep proficiency with Google Cloud Platform, including Kubernetes, Cloud Run, and Cloud Functions.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD workflows using GitHub Actions, as well as monitoring tools like Datadog.
• Strong familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex business needs into technical solutions.
