Staff Software Engineer Application Backend at Voxel

Backed by industry-leading venture capital firms, we operate out of San Francisco with a global team, and we are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join our backend team in a full-time, hybrid capacity.

Key outcomes

• Partner with diverse teams across the organization to gain deep insights into user needs and align our technology with those requirements.
• Take ownership of engineering projects, guiding them from the initial scoping phase through implementation and long-term maintenance.
• Design and propose robust backend services and APIs that address the specific challenges faced by our customers and internal systems.
• Develop high-performance services using Go, Node.js, and Python, leveraging gRPC and AWS infrastructure.
• Manage complex data modeling and storage solutions using PostgreSQL and Protobuf.
• Maintain high system standards by monitoring performance and utilizing data-driven improvements.
• Champion engineering excellence by contributing to Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
• Draft comprehensive technical documentation and design specifications to support our architecture.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to foster the growth of fellow engineers.

Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
• At least 8 years of professional experience building data-intensive backend APIs and services at scale.
• A minimum of 3 years of experience leading cross-functional engineering initiatives.
• A demonstrated history of customer-centric leadership and delivering tangible value.
• Strong proficiency in coding, preferably with Go, C++, Java, or similar typed and compiled languages.
• Extensive production experience with cloud platforms like AWS or GCP and cloud-native architecture.
• Practical knowledge of container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, data stores, indexing strategies, and the associated architectural trade-offs.
• Proven ability to implement rigorous software testing and automation practices.
• Fluency in English.

Preferred qualifications

• Three or more years of experience specifically developing backend services using Go.
• Three or more years of experience designing and implementing gRPC APIs.
• A history of working closely with frontend engineers and product managers to deliver cohesive features.
• Prior experience working with Bazel.
