Staff Backend Engineer at ShortStory

We are looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to join our team on a full-time, remote basis. Short Story is an award-winning, technology-powered retailer dedicated to helping petite women dress with confidence. We are revolutionizing the industry by using a data-driven learning system that turns customer feedback into personalized products. As a fast-growing startup backed by top investors and recognized by major publications like Forbes and Fortune, we are building a wardrobe-as-a-service that connects our customers with clothing that actually fits. You will be one of our first five engineers, reporting directly to the Head of Engineering and helping us scale our logistics and customer-facing platforms.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Python frameworks such as Flask or FastAPI.
• Take ownership of core infrastructure components, including AWS, Postgres, and Kubernetes, while ensuring system reliability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build robust systems for order processing, logistics, and customer personalization through clean API design and CI/CD best practices.

Requirements

• Extensive experience in professional backend development, ideally with five or more years in the field.
• Deep fluency in Python and proven success shipping production systems using frameworks like Flask or FastAPI.
• Strong technical proficiency with Postgres, Kubernetes, and cloud deployment on AWS.
• A commitment to code quality, evidenced by your experience building and maintaining comprehensive test suites with Pytest.
• A track record of leading architectural decisions, designing scalable systems, and thriving in the fast-paced environment of a growing startup.
