Staff Backend Engineer at The Rounds

The role

We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join our team on a full-time, hybrid basis within the United States. This is a senior-level position for a creative engineer who wants to shape our backend architecture, define our technical best practices, and ensure our systems provide an exceptional experience for our members. You will be part of a small, high-velocity team that values shipping often and solving complex, meaningful problems.

Core responsibilities

• Take full ownership of large-scale projects, guiding them from initial planning and prototyping through to testing and final deployment.
• Design and refine the core domain models that serve as the foundation for our business operations.
• Collaborate directly with cross-functional teams to build and iterate on features, ranging from advanced routing optimizers to predictive engines for member orders.

Skills and experience

We are looking for engineers who have a deep technical background and a passion for building reliable, impactful systems. You should have:

• At least 6 years of experience writing production-grade code, with a strong preference for TypeScript.
• A deep understanding of functional programming concepts, including immutability, functional purity, and lazy evaluation.
• Extensive experience with GraphQL, specifically regarding schema design and query optimization.
• A proven track record of owning large-scale projects from design to deployment.
• Bonus points if you have experience with frontend frameworks like React or have previously built logistics and operations technology for e-commerce.

Compensation and benefits

The base salary for this full-time position ranges from $218,000 to $235,000, depending on your specific qualifications and internal level. In addition to your salary, we provide:
