We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team on a full-time basis to help build the next generation of Slate.com. Since 1996, Slate has been a pioneering online magazine and podcast network, known for our distinct editorial voice and award-winning journalism. As part of our small, collaborative development team, you will work alongside product managers and designers to shape the technology powering our digital products. This is an individual contributor role where you will have a direct hand in selecting and implementing the tools that serve our large audience.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement robust web technologies to support our publishing platform and related services.
- Collaborate with our product and design teams to build features that enhance the experience for our readers and listeners.
- Manage the scaling of web content by optimizing caching strategies, load balancing, and data storage solutions.
Requirements
We are seeking candidates with significant experience in full-stack web development who are comfortable working in a hybrid environment from our offices in D.C. or New York. You should possess the following qualifications:
- Extensive experience building websites using JavaScript and Python.
- Strong proficiency with Git, including branching and rebasing workflows.
- Proven experience with continuous integration tools and daily command-line usage.
- A deep understanding of web architecture, including CDNs, caching, and key-value stores.
- Familiarity with technologies such as Node.js, Vue.js, Django, React Native, Redis, Postgres, and Docker.
- A genuine interest in digital publishing and the ability to empathize with our end users.
