We are dedicated to improving the daily lives of commuters by building reliable, modern software for public transit systems. Our team focuses on creating efficient digital tools that help riders navigate their journeys with ease. We believe in leveraging open-source technology and cloud services to deliver high-quality solutions, and we are looking for a talented engineer to help us scale our impact.
About the Role
We are looking for a Mid-Level Software Engineer to join our team as a Contractor. In this role, you will apply engineering best practices to develop and maintain software products that support public transit infrastructure. You will work across the full stack to ensure our systems are robust, scalable, and user-friendly.
Key Responsibilities
- Write high-quality, production-ready code while designing system architectures that can scale effectively.
- Collaborate closely with fellow engineers, product managers, and designers to solve complex technical challenges and deliver features on schedule.
- Ensure the security and privacy of rider data while mentoring team members and fostering an environment of open communication.
Requirements
To be successful in this position, you should have a strong grasp of core programming principles and a desire to use functional programming to address real-world problems. We require at least two years of professional software development experience and a flexible mindset that allows you to contribute to both frontend and backend tasks as needed. While not strictly required, we value experience with Elixir, Ruby, Python, SQL, JavaScript, TypeScript, or React. Familiarity with GTFS or real-time data systems is also a significant plus.
Location
This position is remote. Please note that because this is a contract role for the MBTA, we can only accept applicants who reside in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont. You must be a United States resident and remain in the country for the duration of your contract.
Compensation and Benefits
The pay rate for this position is $75 to $98 per hour on a W-2 basis, with the potential for up to 1,880 hours per year. This results in an annual compensation range of approximately $141,000 to $184,000. Beyond the competitive pay, you will enjoy the flexibility of a fully remote work environment.
