In this role, you’ll explore innovative ways to run Speechmatics' best-in-class speech recognition technology on diverse, customer-specific hardware. You’ll own the end-to-end process of building unique solutions for customers, and you’ll convert, profile, debug, and optimise our tech to run on a variety of devices at the forefront of the ML industry.
This role sits on a team which is central to Speechmatics’ products, owning and architecting the systems that connect our AI transcription models together in an efficient, resilient way. No prior knowledge of audio or speech is necessary for this role – if you’re passionate about collaborating with others to build great tech, we’d like to hear from you!
What you’ll be doing:
- Be an integral part of the team! We’re a tight-knit group, and the tech we own is interconnected with many other teams, so you'll have a huge opportunity to positively influence engineering practices and our overall product. You’ll work closely alongside machine learning engineers, engine developers, architects, and sales engineers to solve new and evolving problems.
- Own the end-to-end process of building solutions for our customers; you’ll talk directly with our partners to understand their requirements and technology, and use your ingenuity to integrate our speech recognition into devices of all shapes, sizes, and applications.
- Own initiatives to continuously improve the system architecture, performance, stability, and feature set of our product. You’ll profile and debug models and the C++ engine around them, consider technical tradeoffs, and ensure our tech runs efficiently on a variety of customer devices.
- Work with a variety of tools and technologies, and collaborate with a team of talented engineers, to solve complex problems. There are endless learning opportunities, we have regular syncs to share ideas, and you’ll have the freedom to work with a wide range of tech.
- Shape our team and engineering culture: join in knowledge sharing across engineering teams, improve technical documentation, mentor other engineers, encourage best engineering practices, and help make Speechmatics a fantastic place to work. You’ll have the support to grow towards management and leadership roles, if you’d enjoy this path.
Why you’re made for this role:
- You feel comfortable developing software in production in C++ and Python, and you’re keen to learn (or already have experience with) some of the technologies we use: Pytorch, Docker, Gitlab, the modern machine learning stack (CUDA, ONNX, Triton), developing in a Linux environment, and working with customer-specific hardware.
- You love to learn through experimentation, and you find it energizing to wrangle problems through perseverance, tinkering, and seeking out new knowledge.
- You’re passionate about creating high quality software, and taking “good” to “great.” You enjoy the exploratory process of improving performance, stability, and maintainability of the code you work with, no matter where a problem lies.
- You’re pragmatic, able to identify technical tradeoffs, and balance “doing things right” with “doing things quickly,” depending on the context. You can navigate short-term changes in priorities as we work towards longer-term goals.
- You’re communicative and collaborative, and you enjoy the journey from the early stages of ambiguity/requirements gathering, through to delivering a finished product that delights customers.
