Hummingbird is a remote-first, distributed team dedicated to the vital mission of fighting financial crime. Since our founding in 2017, we have developed an intuitive SaaS platform that helps major financial institutions and innovative tech companies, such as Stripe and Affirm, manage their compliance programs effectively. We believe that stopping financial crime is a challenge that requires a blend of elegant code, precise language, and thoughtful design. Our goal is to provide the heroes working in this space with the powerful, reliable tools they truly deserve.
The role
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Trust team on a full-time, remote basis. This is a senior-level position where you will take ownership of the foundational platform that powers our entire product. You will be responsible for the infrastructure, security, and platform systems that ensure Hummingbird remains secure, reliable, and capable of scaling to meet the needs of our growing enterprise customer base.
Core responsibilities
- Maintain and improve the underlying infrastructure that supports our platform, including managing our AWS environment with Terraform, building developer tools, and optimizing system performance.
- Collaborate closely with a small, experienced team of engineers to design, prioritize, and implement scalable solutions within a high-stakes, high-security environment.
- Influence our long-term hosting strategy and system architecture, ensuring that our security, reliability, and data integrity remain at the forefront of every technical decision.
Skills and experience
We are looking for someone who thrives in complex, ambiguous environments and is eager to make a tangible impact. Key qualifications include:
- At least 7 years of professional experience working with cloud-hosted web applications, ideally within a startup setting.
- Deep technical proficiency across the stack, including experience with AWS, Terraform, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, and CircleCI.
- Strong programming skills in Ruby on Rails, Python, and TypeScript, along with familiarity with GraphQL.
- A security-first mindset and a passion for debugging complex issues, from low-level networking to high-level system architecture.
- An iterative approach to development and a genuine desire to learn new technologies, such as AI, to improve team efficiency.
Compensation and benefits
We are committed to supporting our team members through a flexible work environment. Benefits include:
- Remote work flexibility.
- Flexible hours to help you balance your professional and personal life.
How to apply
If you are excited about building technology that makes a real-world impact in the fight against financial crime, we want to hear from you. Please reach out to us with your application. We encourage you to apply even if you do not feel you meet every single requirement listed, as we value diverse experiences and are always looking for impactful team members.
