At Northwood, we are dedicated to revolutionizing how the world connects with space. Our mission is to make the advantages of space accessible to everyone by pioneering new communication technologies. We are looking for people who thrive on building things quickly and want to see their contributions deployed in real-world environments across the globe.
The role
We are looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join our team on a full-time, on-site basis in the United States. This is a senior-level position where you will play a critical role in architecting the embedded systems for our next-generation ground stations. You will have the unique opportunity to build a system from the ground up, working alongside a fast-paced team of hardware and firmware engineers to define technical requirements and drive projects to completion.
Core responsibilities
- Design and maintain a custom Linux operating system tailored for our embedded devices.
- Develop robust over-the-air update systems and establish secure architectural requirements.
- Collaborate closely with FPGA and hardware engineering teams to define and implement system architecture.
Skills and experience
To be successful in this role, you should have 5 to 7 or more years of professional engineering experience. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess the following qualifications:
- Proven experience architecting embedded systems from the ground up.
- Strong background in security practices and key management.
- Proficiency with embedded Linux environments such as Yocto or Petalinux.
- Familiarity with standard bus interfaces like I2C, SPI, UART, and USB.
- Practical experience using laboratory tools including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
- Bonus points for experience with Rust, RTOS platforms like Zephyr or FreeRTOS, networking, or direct contributions to the Linux kernel.
Compensation and benefits
Northwood is an equal opportunity employer. We evaluate all candidates based on merit, competence, and qualifications. Please note that to comply with U.S. government space technology export regulations, including ITAR, you must be a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a protected individual as defined by federal law.
How to apply
If you are passionate about space communications and have the technical expertise to help us build a scalable, secure platform, we would love to hear from you. Please submit your application to be considered for this opportunity to join our growing team.
