Blackbird Labs is a loyalty and payments platform founded by industry veterans from Eater and Resy, dedicated to creating meaningful connections between top-tier restaurants and their guests. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our full-time, on-site team in the United States to help us scale our platform and revolutionize the dining experience.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain the core APIs that power our loyalty and payment systems.
- Partner with product managers, designers, and fellow engineers to translate business goals into technical reality.
- Drive key architectural decisions and implement robust, scalable solutions.
- Establish and uphold engineering best practices, focusing on high code quality and performance.
- Mentor team members and contribute to a culture of growth and collaboration.
- Provide technical insights during product and design discussions to ensure feasibility and innovation.
Must-haves
- At least 5 years of professional experience building and deploying backend APIs.
- Strong proficiency in Kotlin or a similar statically typed JVM language.
- Deep expertise in designing RESTful APIs using domain-driven design.
- Solid background in SQL databases, specifically regarding schema design and performance tuning.
- A high level of autonomy and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-ownership environment.
- Strong communication skills in English to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with the Spring framework and Hibernate.
- Knowledge of the U.S. payments ecosystem, including credit, debit, and ACH processing.
- Familiarity with AWS infrastructure and Terraform.
- Interest in blockchain technology and cryptography.
- Experience integrating AI features, such as prompt engineering or model integration.

The target annual salary for this position ranges from $180,000 to $220,000 USD, depending on your experience and location.
