Senior Backend Engineer at Baton (A Ryder Technology Lab)

What is this role?

We are hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Product Engineering team on a full-time, hybrid basis. The role is based in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, with in-office days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and remote days on Monday and Friday. We are looking for someone at the senior level who enjoys shaping architecture, mentoring teammates, and delivering reliable systems at scale.

What will you do?

• Design and build backend services and APIs in Python, using Postgres and GraphQL on AWS, ensuring performance, scalability, and security across our products.
• Provide technical leadership by mentoring junior engineers, guiding architectural decisions, and collaborating with product and platform teams to solve complex challenges.
• Write clean, maintainable code, conduct thoughtful reviews, and help define the long-term backend architecture that supports both current needs and future growth.

What makes you a great fit?

You bring advanced proficiency in Python for web backend development and a strong foundation in first-principles thinking that helps you break down problems from end to end. You have a proven track record leading large-scale backend projects, collaborating across engineering and stakeholder groups, and translating complex requirements into clear, effective solutions. Experience with React is a plus, as is prior work building tools for enterprise users or other developers. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, along with at least five years of software engineering experience, will set you up for success. We communicate primarily in English.

What's in it for you?

The annual base salary range for this position is $200,000 – $296,000. In addition to base pay, you will be eligible for an annual performance bonus.
