Picture a small but mighty engineering crew working behind the scenes to turn every online shopper’s question into a fast, friendly answer. At Zowie we’re recreating the warmth of a neighborhood store on the web, using clever automation so customer-service teams can spend their energy on the conversations that truly matter. Our platform plugs into tools like Zendesk or Shopify, or stands on its own, and today it already powers hundreds of brands that want their customers to feel seen, not scripted.
The opportunity
We’re inviting a Senior Backend Engineer to become the next Scala-focused builder on one of our product squads. You’ll sit among the seventh-to-tenth backend engineers overall, helping steer a living architecture of more than one hundred microservices. Your day-to-day decisions will shape how merchants talk with their shoppers, and you’ll have a real voice in both the technical roadmap and the business outcomes that follow.
A day in the life
- Pair with product and design teammates to translate customer-service workflows into reliable, observable services that speak gRPC, stream events through Kafka, and surface data through GraphQL.
- Review pull requests, refine system designs, and weigh technology choices that keep our stack-PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Redis, and more-fast and maintainable as we grow.
- Join focused planning sessions and retrospectives, then carve out focused time to prototype improvements that directly affect merchants and their shoppers.
Who you are
You bring at least five years of hands-on Scala or other JVM experience, along with rock-solid SQL skills and a genuine love for distributed systems. You can sketch clear architectures, explain trade-offs in plain language, and rally a room around the solution that delivers the most customer value. You’re fluent in both English and Polish, and you thrive when you’re trusted to own end-to-end features rather than waiting for detailed specs.
Bonus points if you’ve already worked with Kafka, Akka, GraphQL, Docker Swarm, or functional libraries such as Cats, Fs2, ZIO, or Http4s, but none of these are required to start making an impact.
