Owning a home is often the biggest investment a person makes, yet it rarely comes with a clear manual. At Thumbtack, we are changing that by building the essential app for homeowners to manage their properties, find the right help, and know exactly what to do next. With over 85 million projects started on our platform and 11 million five-star reviews, we are proud to support local economies and help small businesses thrive. We are a fast-growing team of over 1,000 people, and we are looking for passionate individuals to help us define the future of home care.
What is this role?
We are seeking a Senior Applied Scientist to join our team on a full-time, remote basis. This is a senior-level position where you will have full ownership over your domain within a small, focused product team. You will be responsible for applying advanced scientific techniques to our consumer products, helping us build the next generation of our search, ranking, and matching experiences.
What will you do?
- Architect, develop, and deploy machine learning systems and algorithms directly into our production environment.
- Design and execute rigorous experiments, collecting and analyzing data to better understand our product performance and marketing effectiveness.
- Provide technical mentorship to other applied scientists while balancing the need for scientific rigor with the speed of execution required to drive business impact.
What makes you a great fit?
We are looking for someone who is excited to solve complex problems and can communicate effectively with cross-functional partners. You should be comfortable working in a remote environment and possess the following qualifications:
- Expert knowledge of machine learning, specifically regarding search, ranking, and matching challenges.
- Proficiency in Python for reading, writing, and debugging production-level code.
- Strong background in statistics, including experimental design, optimization, and causal inference.
- Experience with NLP techniques and modern LLM tools.
- A proven ability to lead technical roadmaps and deliver impactful results for the business.
What's in it for you?
We offer a competitive compensation package based on your location. For candidates in the San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle metro areas, the salary range is $191,250 - $247,500. For all other U.S. locations, the salary range is $162,562.50 - $210,375. Beyond your salary, you will enjoy several benefits:
- A remote-first working model that includes occasional in-person events.
- An employee assistance program to support your mental health and overall well-being.
- Twenty company-wide holidays, including a week-long shutdown at the end of the year.
- Reimbursements for your home WiFi and cell phone expenses.
