You'll step into a hands-on leadership role at Viam, a New York City-based company founded in 2020 by Eliot Horowitz that gives engineers across robotics, food and beverage, climate tech, marine, and industrial manufacturing a single platform to combine AI, data, and automation. Our 1000-square-foot robotics lab and maker space in Manhattan needs someone who can keep equipment running smoothly while guiding software engineers through the physical side of their projects.
What you'll be doing
- Bring order and clear processes to the lab by setting up preventive maintenance schedules, managing inventory, coordinating shared tools, and keeping the space organized and safe while still welcoming collaboration.
- Keep all equipment in top condition, from 3D printers and laser cutters to UR20 and xArm6 robot arms, drill presses, and electronics gear, so projects never stall for lack of working hardware.
- Act as the primary technical mentor for internal software engineers, helping them move from breadboard circuits to finished assemblies by offering CAD support, electronics guidance, prototyping advice, and design feedback.
What you'll bring
- At least three years of experience in a technical lab, maker space, or R&D setting where you maintained equipment and supported multiple projects at once.
- Strong proficiency with CAD tools for mechanical parts and printed circuit boards, plus substantial hands-on electronics prototyping experience that includes circuit design, component selection, and debugging.
- Practical skill with 3D printing, basic fabrication tools, and precision equipment, along with the interpersonal ability to mentor engineers who have different levels of hardware experience.
- Fluency in English and genuine enthusiasm for Viam's robotics platform and mission.
What you'll get
This full-time, on-site position in New York, NY offers a salary range of $90,000 - 115,000 per year. In addition to cash compensation, we provide equity grants, medical insurance, and paid time off.
