Picture a small, focused team of builders who believe the next leap in software will come from open, personal AI agents that truly work for the people using them. Our first creation, Sculptor, already lets engineers run and coordinate multiple coding agents side by side, turning what used to be slow, solitary work into a fast, flowing collaboration. We’re starting with code because it’s the clearest place to prove that open agents can outperform closed ones, and the lessons we learn here will shape every intelligent tool that follows.
The opportunity
As a Research Engineer you will design and ship the core intelligence inside Sculptor. Your work will decide how reliably our agents write, test, and improve code, and you’ll see those decisions turn into features used daily by thousands of developers. This is not a supporting role; the systems you create become the product itself, giving you direct influence over both the research direction and the user experience.
A day in the life
- Design verification systems-test generation pipelines, LLM-as-judge frameworks, and other techniques-that raise the reliability of coding agents before they ever reach a user.
- Transform open-ended research questions into measurable tasks by combining careful annotation, synthetic data creation, and product-usage logs, then track progress against those metrics.
- Close the loop on agent performance with self-critique mechanisms and evolutionary algorithms, then package the results into clear tooling that lets developers inspect, guide, and trust their agents.
Who you are
You are driven by the challenge of making AI agents dependable in real-world settings and excited by the prospect of shipping that work to thousands of developers. You work independently, turning ambiguous problems into concrete plans without waiting for detailed instructions. You bring strong Python skills along with hands-on experience using large language models and agent-based workflows, and you communicate comfortably in English.
Why you'll love it here
We offer a salary range of $170,000–$400,000. In addition, you’ll receive company-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents, a $250 monthly lifestyle stipend, daily lunch when you’re onsite, and flexible PTO. We invest in your growth through coaching, courses, and conferences, and we gather regularly for team events, dinners, and offsites-recent destinations have included New York City, Santa Cruz, Hawai’i, and Tokyo.
