We invite you to join our Research and Development team at Niantic, where we build the global-scale digital map and platform that powers immersive experiences like Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now. We are looking for curious minds to help us innovate and contribute to the future of AR through a 3 or 4 month research internship based in our London office.

What you bring

As an R&D Software Engineering Intern, you will dive into complex challenges within the realms of computer vision, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. This internship is designed for students who want to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application. You will be based in the United Kingdom, with a requirement to work from our office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Your primary responsibilities will include:

• Leading deep-dive research into specific technical topics to break new ground in the field of augmented reality.
• Developing methods to interpret real-world imagery and telemetry to improve tracking, 3D reconstruction, and user interaction.
• Collaborating with our internal researchers and engineers to build discoveries that enhance the Niantic Platform for millions of users.

Requirements

We are looking for candidates currently enrolled in a PhD program with a focus on robotics, computer vision, machine learning, or HCI. You should be comfortable building software systems using Python or C++, and you should have experience training models or running user studies. A strong ability to critique published research and communicate your findings in technical English is essential. We value individuals who are proactive, intellectually curious, and capable of managing their own experiments. Having prior experience with deep learning frameworks or having published papers at major conferences is a significant plus.
