At Code for America, we believe that government services should be accessible, effective, and designed with the people who need them most in mind. For over a decade, we have worked to bridge the gap between technology and the public sector, creating digital tools that break down barriers and foster real, lasting change. We are looking for a Principal Solutions Architect to join our mission-driven team. If you are passionate about using technology to improve government services and want to work in a supportive, flexible environment, we would love to meet you.
What you'll be doing
- You will lead technical strategy, implementation, and integration projects, working directly with government partners to modernize safety net services and improve program access.
- You will act as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, translating complex system constraints into clear, actionable roadmaps and high-value architectural solutions.
- You will design and implement flexible, open-source solutions while mentoring team members and helping government agencies assess their readiness for emerging technologies like AI.
What you'll bring
To be successful in this role, you should possess a blend of deep technical expertise and the ability to navigate complex human and organizational dynamics. We are looking for the following qualifications:
- At least 10 years of experience in software engineering or solutions architecture, with a proven track record of leading projects and managing customer relationships.
- At least 4 years of hands-on experience building backend systems and data infrastructure using industry-standard languages such as Python, Ruby, Java, Scala, or Kotlin.
- At least 2 years of experience integrating emerging technologies, such as generative AI, into production workflows.
- The ability to communicate intricate technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Strong self-management skills, tenacity, and the ability to thrive in ambiguous environments.
- A deep curiosity and empathy for the people our government partners serve.
- Fluency in English.
What you'll get
We offer a salary range of $143,884 to $176,138 annually, reflecting our commitment to transparency and fair compensation. In addition to your salary, you will receive a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth:
- Remote work flexibility with the ability to work from anywhere in the U.S.
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.
- A 401k retirement plan with employer matching.
- Generous paid time off, including open personal time, 16 paid holidays, paid sick leave, and competitive parental leave.
- Professional development stipends to support your ongoing learning.
- Flexible working hours to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
