What is this role?
We are hiring a Principal Software Engineer to join our Control Systems Product Development team on a full-time, on-site basis in the United States. This senior-level position leads technical direction for a team of twelve-plus software engineers who create the real-time control software that runs our industrial pulsed-laser additive manufacturing systems.
What will you do?
- Architect and implement hard real-time C++ software that operates our high-speed, multi-laser Area Printer, including complex multi-axis motion control subsystems.
- Provide technical leadership and day-to-day guidance to the equipment software controls engineering team while mentoring both junior and senior engineers.
- Partner with the Director of Controls, Process Engineering, Program Management, and executive leadership to shape strategic roadmaps, prioritize technical investments, and manage cross-functional trade-offs.
What makes you a great fit?
You hold a four-year degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field, along with at least seven years of relevant experience. You bring advanced skills in deterministic, hard real-time C++ development and a deep command of object-oriented design and analysis. You are comfortable guiding projects through the full Software Development Life Cycle and have a track record of growing engineers while fostering a psychologically safe, collaborative environment. Experience programming multi-axis motion controllers such as Galil or ACS is highly valued, and EtherCAT motion controller experience is a strong plus. You communicate clearly across disciplines, balance technical debt with new capability, and write clean, reusable code that others can rely on. Additive manufacturing experience, a master’s degree, PLC programming, and high-precision micron-scale motion control work are nice to have but not required. All work is conducted in English.
