Karius is a venture-backed life science company dedicated to transforming infectious disease diagnostics by identifying over 1,000 human pathogens from a single blood sample. As a Principal Platform Architect, you will lead the strategic direction and development of our R&D and operations platform, directly influencing how we solve complex clinical cases and improve patient outcomes worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Lead architectural projects from initial concept through to final delivery, ensuring all work meets quality and regulatory standards.
- Create comprehensive architectural blueprints, frameworks, and guidelines for our platform operations.
- Ensure our platform remains secure, scalable, and performant while meeting all business requirements.
- Design our infrastructure to be cloud-vendor agnostic and capable of global deployment via infrastructure-as-code.
- Provide the engineering and research teams with the tools, processes, and infrastructure necessary to maximize productivity.
- Clearly communicate complex technical strategies and risk assessments to both technical and business stakeholders.
- Stay at the forefront of industry trends to ensure we are leveraging the best available technologies.
Must-haves
- At least 15 years of engineering experience, with a minimum of 10 years focused on leading the development and operation of cloud-native platforms and distributed systems.
- A B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Genetics, or a related field.
- Expertise in infrastructure-as-code, specifically using Terraform.
- Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and various cloud services for data analytics and software operations.
- Deep understanding of microservices, design patterns, and failure management in distributed systems.
- Proficiency in DevOps and GitOps methodologies.
- Working knowledge of security standards such as NIST CSF/SSDF and experience implementing cloud security controls.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and influence cross-functional teams to drive organizational change.
- Fluency in English.
Nice-to-haves
- A Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or science field.
- Experience working within the healthcare or life sciences sectors, particularly in the development of medical devices.
