We are currently searching for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Instrument Mechanical Engineering group in San Diego, where you will lead the architecture, design, and optimization of complex scientific instruments.
Key outcomes
- Translate high-level market needs into detailed product requirements, system architectures, and component selections.
- Design functional modules and dynamic sub-systems that integrate seamlessly into our broader product architecture.
- Balance complex performance trade-offs across thermal, structural, fluidic, optical, and motion domains.
- Perform modal analyses and interpret Bode plots to guide control schemes and feedback loops.
- Oversee the development of dynamic systems, including the creation of diagnostic tools to meet performance benchmarks.
- Direct cross-functional root cause investigations regarding vibration, shock, noise, and thermal gradients using data-driven methodologies.
- Manage the transition of reliable solutions from research and development into operations, while supporting existing product lines.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance instrument reliability, robustness, and overall performance.
- Support our long-term product roadmap by validating new design concepts and emerging technologies.
Requirements
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, or Mechanical Engineering, combined with at least 16 years of relevant industry experience.
- A proven history of success in dynamic systems engineering, covering the full product lifecycle from initial concept to commercial launch.
- Deep theoretical and practical knowledge of control theory, including PID feedback and control design principles such as kinematics and dynamics modeling.
- Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation.
- Strong critical thinking skills and a relentless drive to understand the scientific root causes of system performance.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary setting and adapt quickly to shifting priorities.
- Fluency in English.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with programming languages such as Python, C#, .NET, or LabView.
Compensation
The base salary range for this position is $156,000 to $221,000. In addition to base pay, you will be eligible for stock options, a 401k plan, and medical insurance coverage.
