Principal Data Engineer at Plus Power

Plus Power is a leader in the energy storage sector, managing a portfolio of over 10 GW across North America to help transition the grid toward cleaner, more versatile infrastructure. We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer to join our remote team and lead the development of a robust data platform that serves our plant managers, analysts, and trading teams.

Responsibilities

• Partner with business stakeholders and technical leaders to architect and implement critical system features.
• Master our data landscape, including SCADA sensor data, operational performance metrics, and market research, to understand their utility across the organization.
• Design an expressive data model that transforms raw data into actionable institutional knowledge.
• Lead architectural decision-making and prioritize initiatives in collaboration with client leadership.
• Act as an implementation champion by building core components and establishing reusable patterns for the engineering team.
• Define and promote best practices for data governance, asset evolution, and resource tracking.

Must-haves

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.
• At least 8 years of professional experience using Python and SQL, including work with tabular data interfaces like Pandas, Polars, or PyArrow.
• Proven track record of designing scalable distributed systems with a focus on data integrity.
• Hands-on experience developing and maintaining relational databases, specifically PostgreSQL or TimescaleDB.
• Demonstrated technical leadership and the ability to manage projects from conception to execution.
• Strong communication skills and experience supporting business intelligence layers for diverse end-users.
• Familiarity with agile methodologies and tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
• Fluency in English.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working with real-time streaming data from battery energy storage systems.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Background in functional software development.
• Experience with object-oriented, document-oriented, or graph-based data platforms.
