At the New York Independent System Operator, we are the heartbeat of the state's energy grid. We manage the flow of electricity across more than 11,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, ensuring that power reaches homes and businesses across New York. Our Information Technology department is the backbone of this mission, where we apply cutting-edge technology to keep the grid reliable and plan for a sustainable energy future. We are looking for a dedicated Network Engineer to join our team and help us maintain the critical infrastructure that powers the Empire State.
The opportunity
As a Network Engineer, you will play a vital role in the administration and management of our local and wide-area network systems. You will be responsible for the health of our network, ensuring that our infrastructure is secure, performant, and resilient. This position is perfect for someone who enjoys working on complex systems and wants to contribute to a mission-critical environment where reliability is everything. You will collaborate with developers and infrastructure peers to support our energy markets and operations, ensuring that our technology stays ahead of the curve.
A day in the life
- You will install, configure, and maintain essential network components, including routers, firewalls, switches, and SD-WAN infrastructure, while managing capacity and IP addressing.
- You will take ownership of our network security and integrity, performing zero-day analysis, hardening systems, and ensuring strict compliance with regulatory standards like NERC CIP and SOC1.
- You will participate in deep-dive troubleshooting and root cause analysis, providing 24x7 technical support on a rotational basis to ensure our production services remain stable and responsive.
Who you are
You are a mid-level professional with a strong background in network engineering and a passion for technology. You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field, and you bring three to five years of hands-on experience to the table. You are fluent in English and possess a solid understanding of the OSI seven-layer model, along with intermediate competency in both Windows and UNIX environments. You have experience managing network hardware and security devices, and you are comfortable working with cloud technologies like AWS or Azure. Most importantly, you are a problem-solver who can interpret complex technical documentation and communicate effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders.
Why you'll love it here
We believe in supporting our team members both professionally and personally. We offer a competitive salary range of $76,200 to $127,200 USD. Beyond the compensation, you will enjoy a culture that values flexibility and balance, including:
- The ability to work in a hybrid environment that combines remote work with periodic on-site collaboration.
- Flexible working hours to help you manage your professional and personal commitments.
- Comprehensive medical insurance coverage.
- Generous paid time off to recharge.
