At Modal, we are building the infrastructure that powers the next generation of AI. Our platform provides teams with instant access to GPUs, near-instant container startups, and native storage, allowing them to train models and serve inference without the headache of managing complex infrastructure. We have grown rapidly to reach high 8-figure ARR and a $1.1B valuation, serving thousands of customers like Substack, Scale AI, and Suno. Our team is a collection of researchers, open-source contributors, and engineering leaders who are passionate about solving hard problems, and we would love for you to join us in our NYC or Stockholm offices.
The opportunity
We are searching for a Member of Technical Staff to join our systems team. In this role, you will be at the heart of our serverless platform, designing and maintaining the high-performance systems that keep our infrastructure running smoothly. This is a chance to work on challenging, novel engineering problems at a company that is already scaling rapidly. You will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on our architecture while working alongside a team of highly experienced engineers.
A day in the life
- You will design and implement robust, high-performance distributed systems that form the backbone of our serverless AI platform.
- You will dive deep into low-level systems, working with the Linux kernel, file systems, and container technologies to optimize performance.
- You will collaborate with our engineering team to solve complex scaling challenges and improve the overall efficiency of our infrastructure.
Who you are
You are a senior-level engineer with a track record of building high-quality production code. You have a deep understanding of distributed systems and have navigated the complexities of scaling infrastructure in the cloud. You possess a strong grasp of operating system fundamentals, including the Linux kernel and containerization. You are a performance-minded engineer who enjoys finding ways to shave milliseconds off latency, and you are comfortable working in an on-site environment in either our NYC or Stockholm office. While prior experience with Rust is a bonus, it is not a strict requirement. You communicate effectively in English and are ready to tackle the unique technical hurdles of a fast-growing AI infrastructure company.
Why you'll love it here
Joining Modal means becoming part of an early-stage company that is already making waves in the AI industry. You will be surrounded by a talented team that includes creators of well-known open-source projects and experienced industry leaders. We offer a fast-paced environment where you will have plenty of room to grow your career and take on significant responsibilities as we continue to scale our platform for thousands of users.
