At Ouster, we design and manufacture advanced LIDAR sensors that help engineers, roboticists, and researchers make machines safer and more efficient. Our technology replaces thousands of analog parts with a single chip-scale laser array and CMOS sensor, delivering high-resolution imaging at a much lower cost. These sensors power autonomous vehicles, drones, and other demanding applications around the world. We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our hardware team on-site in the United States and contribute directly to the next generation of our products.
What you'll be doing
- Work side-by-side with hardware engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to review and refine upcoming sensor designs.
- Build and evaluate prototypes, run tests, and troubleshoot issues with cross-functional partners to improve overall product performance.
- Help create test plans and protocols, carry out experiments, and analyze the resulting data to guide design decisions.
What you'll bring
- Progress toward or completion of a BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Practical experience from mechanical design or product-development projects completed in class, research, or prior work.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and drawing creation.
- Understanding of common manufacturing methods such as machining, injection molding, and 3D printing.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for sharing findings with teammates.
- Comfort working in a fast-moving, collaborative environment where priorities can shift quickly.
We recognize that no single candidate will meet every qualification, and we encourage you to apply if your background aligns with most of the items above.
What you'll get
- Medical, vision, and dental coverage with premiums fully paid for you and 75 percent paid for dependents.
- 401(k) retirement plan with company match up to 4 percent.
- Life insurance plus short-term and long-term disability coverage.
- 15 vacation days and 10 paid holidays each year, plus paid parental leave.
- Pre-tax commuter, health-care, and dependent-care accounts.
- Flexible working hours and a dog-friendly office in San Francisco’s Mission District that includes a stocked kitchen and nightly catered dinners.
