At CoVar, we are a tight-knit team of engineers based in Durham, North Carolina, dedicated to solving some of the world's most pressing challenges through artificial intelligence. We focus on high-impact R&D, creating tools that assist the Department of Defense in threat detection, support biomedical researchers in the quest for new cures, and monitor industrial machinery to keep environments safe. We believe in pushing the boundaries of what machine learning can achieve in the real world, and we are looking for curious, driven students to join us in this mission.
The opportunity
We are offering an 8 to 12-week internship that places you directly into the heart of our development process. This is an on-site role where you will be matched with a specific project tailored to your interests and expertise. You will work closely with a dedicated advisor who will support your growth and help you hit your professional goals. By the end of the summer, you will have the chance to present your findings either to our internal team or directly to our customers, giving you a clear view of how your code makes a tangible difference.
A day in the life
- You will dive into real-world datasets to develop and refine machine learning algorithms that solve complex customer problems.
- You will write and test production-grade code, ensuring your models are ready for deployment on actual systems.
- You will evaluate your results and communicate your technical progress to your team and high-level stakeholders.
Who you are
You are a student currently pursuing a degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, with a preference for those working toward an M.S. or Ph.D. You are a United States citizen with a strong grasp of English and excellent technical communication skills. Your toolkit includes a deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals, such as gradient descent and cross-validation, along with proficiency in Python, NumPy, Pandas, Git, and PyTorch. We are particularly interested in candidates who have experience with computer vision algorithms like object detection networks, though we also value knowledge in natural language processing or Bayesian models. Any prior experience working with the Department of Defense is considered a major plus.
Why you'll love it here
We value your time and your contributions, which is why we offer competitive hourly wages for all our interns. You will also enjoy a flexible work schedule that helps you balance your professional development with your personal life. If you have any questions throughout the application process, please feel free to reach out to us via email with the subject line 2026 SUMMER INTERNSHIP.
