Imagine working in a place where your code directly impacts national security, medical breakthroughs, and industrial safety. At CoVar, we are a tight-knit team of engineers based in Durham, North Carolina, dedicated to solving complex, real-world problems through advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning. From helping the Department of Defense identify threats to assisting biomedical researchers in their search for life-saving cures, we push the boundaries of what technology can achieve. We are looking for a dedicated Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our mission-driven team and help us build tools that truly matter.
The opportunity
In this role, you will be at the heart of our technical operations, bridging the gap between raw data and actionable intelligence. You will design and deploy sophisticated machine learning algorithms, evaluate their performance, and write the production-grade code that powers our systems in the field. This is a unique chance to work on high-stakes projects where you will interact directly with industry and government clients. You will also have the freedom to document your findings and publish your research, whether in public forums or classified settings.
A day in the life
- You will develop and refine machine learning models using Python and frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow to address specific customer challenges.
- You will collaborate with our engineering team to integrate your algorithms into production environments, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and reliable.
- You will present your technical progress and findings to stakeholders, including partners within the Department of Defense and the broader research community.
Who you are
You are a seasoned engineer who thrives on solving difficult technical problems. You have a deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals, such as cross-validation and gradient descent, and you are comfortable working with classical methods alongside modern deep learning techniques. You communicate complex ideas clearly, and you are excited about the prospect of working in Durham, NC. Because of the nature of our work, you must be eligible for a United States security clearance.
Your background should include:
- Strong proficiency in Python, including libraries like NumPy and Pandas.
- Extensive experience with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- A solid grasp of computer vision, including object detection networks and image classification.
- A degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a related field, with a preference for those holding an M.S. or Ph.D.
- A working knowledge of version control tools like Git and experience with CI/CD pipelines.
Why you'll love it here
We believe in taking care of our people so they can focus on doing their best work. When you join our team, you will enjoy a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your long-term success and well-being.
- Financial security through a 401k plan with employer contributions and an equity compensation structure.
- Comprehensive health coverage, including dental and vision insurance.
- Support for your professional growth through tuition reimbursement programs.
