Machine Learning Engineer at CoVar

CoVar is a specialized software research and development firm based in Durham, North Carolina, focused on applying artificial intelligence to solve high-impact challenges. Our team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of machine learning, creating tools that assist the Department of Defense in threat detection, support biomedical researchers in the search for new medical cures, and monitor industrial machinery to improve safety and environmental protection. We are looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to join our full-time, on-site team and help us build robust algorithms that transition from research to real-world deployment.

Key outcomes

• Develop and refine machine learning algorithms to address complex customer requirements.
• Manage the full data lifecycle, from initial analysis and algorithm development to the creation of production-ready code.
• Evaluate model performance and iterate on solutions to ensure they meet rigorous operational standards.
• Communicate technical findings and project results directly to high-level stakeholders within the defense and commercial sectors.
• Contribute to the advancement of the field through opportunities to publish novel research in both classified and unclassified environments.

Requirements

• Strong proficiency in Python, including the use of libraries such as NumPy and Pandas.
• Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks, specifically PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals, including gradient descent, cross-validation, and performance metrics like ROC curves and confusion matrices.
• Experience with version control using Git and the implementation of CI/CD pipelines and regression testing.
• Expertise in at least one core area, such as computer vision, natural language processing, or Bayesian models.
• A B.S. degree in engineering, mathematics, computer science, or a related technical field, though an M.S. or Ph.D. is preferred.
• Excellent technical communication skills in English.
• Ability to work on-site in Durham, NC, and eligibility to obtain a U.S. security clearance.

Preferred qualifications

• Prior experience working on projects for the Department of Defense.
• Familiarity with classical machine learning techniques, including support-vector machines and logistic regression.
• Practical knowledge of modern computer vision architectures, such as object detection networks and image classification techniques.
