At CarGurus, our mission is to give people the power to reach their destination. We began as a small team of developers committed to bringing trust and transparency to car shopping. Today we operate the largest and fastest-growing automotive marketplace in the United States, serving tens of millions of monthly visitors and roughly 30,000 dealerships. Our profitable, 15-year track record of innovation continues as we move the entire automotive journey online, from selling a used vehicle to financing, purchasing, and delivering a new one.
The role
We are hiring a Lead UX Designer to join our product organization on a full-time, hybrid basis in the United States. This senior individual-contributor position calls for a designer with lead-level experience who will shape user experiences across our consumer website and mobile app while guiding design direction for key product areas.
Core responsibilities
- Act as the primary design authority for designated UI areas, ensuring consistency and quality by championing the effective use of our design system across multiple designers’ work.
- Lead hands-on design for strategic projects, owning end-to-end deliverables from early-stage concept ideation through high-fidelity prototypes and production-ready specs.
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and fellow designers to define priorities, drive user research, and translate insights into delightful, data-informed experiences that advance business goals.
Skills and experience
We look for candidates who bring at least eight years of UX design experience on complex, large-scale digital products, along with a strong portfolio that demonstrates both early-stage ideation and design-system contributions. You should have expert proficiency in Figma, deep knowledge of UX and UI principles for web and mobile, and practical familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript so you can partner effectively with engineers. Experience creating, implementing, and evolving design systems in sizable applications is essential, as is comfort working within Agile/Scrum environments. Additional valued skills include user-research methodologies, A/B testing, data visualization, accessibility standards, and service-design or journey-mapping techniques. Formal training in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field is desirable, though deep commensurate experience may substitute. Automotive or e-commerce industry exposure is a plus, and excellent communication and presentation abilities are required to articulate design decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Compensation and benefits
We offer equity compensation for every employee, flexible hours, hybrid and remote work options, generous paid time off, and dedicated professional-development resources. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance is provided, along with a 401k plan. Additional perks include daily free lunch, a new-car discount, meditation and fitness app subscriptions, and commuting-cost coverage.
How to apply
If this opportunity aligns with your experience and interests, we encourage you to apply. We welcome candidates who bring fresh perspectives and value the skills and stories that each individual contributes.
